With approximately 25,000 students, Birmingham City University (formerly University of Central England) is one of the UK's largest universities with a diverse range of courses available. One of the former polytechnics that became universities in 1992, BCU has a distinct range of technical and art & design courses that are distinct from Birmingham's two older universities as well as more traditional degree courses. The School of Fine Art (also known as BIAD) is particularly famous in the West Midlands as an elite location to study this discipline.

BCU is the result of many merged institutions and because of this, it is located across many campuses throughout Birmingham. Long term plans are to merge these campuses gradually and a £150 million programme to extend the city centre campus is underway to begin this process.
