Charles Darwin University (CDU) was established in 2003, the final result of many previous mergers and education developments in the Northern Territory since the 1950s. CDU offers education from senior school students through to undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees. Over 21,000 students attend at four campuses and four training centres. Further training is delivered at remote locations within the territory and CDU also supports the Australian Defence Force in Higher Education and participates in the Australian Apprenticeship programme.

Charles Darwin University is a member of the Innovative Research Universities and is recognized for research expertise and leadership in tropical and desert knowledge of the Australian and Asia-Pacific region.
