BA Fine Art (Chelsea College of Arts) @ UAL

reviewed on October 6, 2014

The BA for Fine Art had a way of brining together a great team of tutors and external practitioners in order to stimulate thinking and the development of individual practices. The university was supportive of creativity and their students and the facilities were great.

BA (Hons) Graphic Design (Central St Martins) @ UAL

For a university with such a good reputation I don't consider the education I've received to be any better than that of other universities. The onus seems to be on the students to teach themselves, in my final year I have received 20 minutes of dedicated contact time a week. The campus itself is brand new but the systems in place within it are restrictive. For instance courses can not use each others facilities (Workshops, tools, materials etc..) and considering I study a course which relies heavily on visual outcomes the printing costs are astronomical (50p per sheet of colour A4). I believe it has around 50% foreign students, most of which appear to be from wealthy backgrounds. Overall if you want to be able to put a reputable name on your CV then go for it, but I don't feel I've experienced anything that sets it apart from any other London based design course.

BA Fashion Design and Development (London College of Fashion) @ UAL

reviewed on February 11, 2014

Studying abroad is a big move to make, but it is an experience that has a HUGE impact on one's present and future life. However, studying in London increases the benefit of such an experience tenfold. Especially being in a creative course, the city contributes SO MUCH to projects, general creativity and inspiration, as well as productivity.

Coming from a theoretical background (I previously studied for and got my Bachelor degree in Psychology), I anticipated that I would have a tougher time adapting to a creative course and all of its demands. A substantial workload is always present, regardless of which course you select. Still, coping with the workload together with changing city or country can be made easier with the right kind of help. I can honestly say that such help was offered by the London College of Fashion and UAL in general. The administration staff responsible for applications, interviews and portfolio submissions were communicative, honest, timely and organised and friendly.

Moreover, the course is all that I expected it to be - as a group and as individuals we are motivated to be our best possible creative selves, offer our best work and keep ourselves motivated. We are given the chance to work together whilst still receiving the individual support from our tutors. The material studied is extensive - being in a fashion course, we have already covered sewing basics (and not so basics), multiple pattern cutting techniques, several design processes from colour and fabric selection, to 3D printing.

Though a couple of the campuses could do with a freshening up, the facilities that are available are extensive... and moreover, induction sessions for these facilities and services are regularly carried out if in demand.

So, in a nutshell, though the process of application, interview, moving country and getting through the first months of an undergraduate education may seem daunting (to say the least), the rewards are plenty. UAL offers students the chance to break out of their shell, explore the extent of their creativity and develop and grow both as students and as successful people. The growth process, the educational environment, the support and the city all help in making a stimulating and inspiring life experience.
