BNUR Nursing @ USQ

i commenced study this year at USQ Toowoomba campus :) i was very nervous and it was a very big transition from high school to uni. the teaching staff are very thorough with study material and also very understanding with us first year students, they're very supportive and ensure every student is okay. i experienced some trouble with the usq website as it was very confusing to me at first and every staff member that i contacted did their best to help me. USQ is a very god university and is very flexible for every student.

The teachers and lecturers in my courses are great. They have a lot of time for you outside of classes, and will even help with things outside of your coursework. But I do really get extremely frustrated when the lecturers want to help me (and other students by the look of the forums), but can't, because of Administrators who won't/can't approve things, like relevant field trips, and on campus (or even in-depth) lectures (for external courses). It is very obvious to the student's as well that the teaching staff are frustrated by this as well. It would be hard to offer a competitive course when options are limited so much.

I also feel that on campus participation rates in student groups is abysmal. With so many students being 'mature aged', there are less and less people who want to participate. Student groups at USQ struggle to meet 'enrolment' numbers, while other universities are charging 'joining' fees. There is not a lot of support from the university to encourage student group participation; many of my friends joke that USQ is like Hogwarts - you don't know something is there until you fall on top of it by accident. This became especially clear when I learned that each faculty has a 'student enrichment officer'. As someone who is very actively involved with student enrichment activities, I was surprised to learn about a staff member that I could have benefited from meeting much earlier.

The colleges are very exclusive, which is understandable to a degree - but not to the point where there are multiple opportunities that non-college students can't even use even through their own initiative.

There also seems to be a general consensus amongst students that there is quite a bit of contempt held towards the students by the administrators. We very much feel like we are being taken advantage of - USQ is a business, and that is very obvious. There are many occasions where educational starboards and benefits are compromised, for the sake of saving a couple of $$$.

Overall, USQ is a good university, solely to the thanks of the faculty. The administrators attitude towards students is detrimental to our experience, and thus our onward recommendations to choose USQ as an education institute. For me personally, I would have transferred uni's if not for the economic benefit of staying in Toowoomba. Please, we just want to feel like we are actually important to the university, and not just another source of income.

It is a place where you know that they want you to succeed. Usq and the staff are never far away and always willing to help. They motivate you, encourage you, and want to see you graduate. I am so glad that I chose usq to help me become the successful person I know I can be.

I started at USQ in 2013 semester 3, studying TPP. I started Nursing this year in Semester 1. I really love all of my lecturers. I love how they treat everyone like adults, and not like children like teachers do in high school, which is sort of what I was expecting. They are all so friendly and helpful and always there when we need them.
It is a smaller more intimate University which I think is great because everyone gets to know each other better. It's easier to make friends when the amount of people around you isn't daunting.
The campus isn't huge which I see as a plus because the bigger ones in Brisbane that I have visited seem scary and overwhelming, so not worrying about getting lost takes a bit of the edge off being a new student. It's also nice and clean and modern which makes it a fun place to spend time at, even when not studying!
I love USQ Hervey Bay and would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to study in the area.
