MA International Business @ York St John

reviewed on March 13, 2014

My experience at York St John Business School has been one I will never forget. I chose to study International Business as I have always had an interest in this area of study. Considering a career in international organisations operating in different cultures, the course is so interesting which enables me to develop my personal skills. The nature of the course all over the world is increasingly global. The course develops your understanding of how businesses operate internationally and the challenges managers face, giving you the confidence to work in a culturally diverse environment.None of this would have been possible without the help of YSJ and the outstanding support I have been given from my lecturers throughout my studies.

MA Applied Linguistics: TESOL @ York St John

reviewed on February 26, 2014

When I arrived my university, at first, I am very excited in a new environment: different looks, different food, different buildings, different languages, different cultures…. People here are very politely, even in the street around the campus, they say hello to me very friendly. I feel very excited in the welcome week! Our uni have arranged lots of activities for us, for example, the students’ union offers us the chance to get involved. Teachers in the international office are very patient and responsible, and my roommates are very kind, so I feel very happy to study here.

I think Free English support, one-to- one tutorial and one-day trip are all my favourite parts in my university.

My language teacher, Charlie, is also my course mate in the 1st semester, he is very patient and warm-hearted. He taught me how to use words accuracy, and how to read effectively, and help me improve our writing skills. From him, I have learned a lot, and make progress in my assessment.

Our class size is small, so we can easily to communicate with my teachers. Because of some language problems, I have misunderstanding of my reading, one-to-one tutorial is very good for me to solve my problems. And teachers often correct me and give me some advice. We are not only discussing some questions about my course, they also give me some good advice about my future career. That’s really very useful, and we become closed.

As an international student, it takes me much time in reading and home works. One-day trip is not only make me relax, but also provide me an opportunity to know the beautiful scenery in the UK. Teachers or volunteers followed us to keep students safe and explain some cultural things about some place we will visit. I like it very much!

About my courses, in the 1st semester, I learned Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition. Teachers explained many language theories and phenomenon to us and try to connect them to other fields, such as psychology, pedagogy, anthropology etc.. And in the 2nd semester, Language Teaching Methodology and Classroom Language Research encouraged us to use the theories to do some original research and to do some teaching practice in a real situation. The peer teaching give me a chance to accumulate some teaching experience.

And teachers are more like friends out of classroom, they often recommend some places, activities and language websites for us. For example, before Christmas holiday, my teacher Rachel led us to watch the Christmas Carol, that’s really a wonderful night!

I think study in York st John have helped me in my future career. From my course, lots of reading and writing trained me to critical thinking and broaden my horizon. And our university website often send me some information about jobs and future educations by E-mail.

And after class, there are also have lots of experiences I feel unforgentable.
NO.1 Christian
My course mate Lauren who comes from America led me to go to st Michael church, I know many students there, they are Christians, and they are kind-heart, very nice and enthusiastic. Though I have no Christian background, I would like to join them. St Michael church has many interesting activities for students, such as Equip, Christmas party, etc.. the sense of belonging make me feel protective.

NO.2 Volunteer System
York st John have a good system of volunteering, it gives us some chance to help others to enrich our life. During Christmas holiday, I went to York volunteer center, they introduce two place, one is Book for Amnesty , the other is Caroline rainbow foundation. I feel these not very suitable for me, and the teacher in Careers and Employability Team help me a lot, Liz and Suzanne talk with me, and introduce me to Oxfam. I feel very grateful!

My university also orgnasied some very good activities for celebrating festivals, for example,
on Christmas Eve, we went to York minster to watch opera; and we celebrated Chinese New Year in Students Union.

To the students who want to study in York st John, especially for Chinese students, I have several advice below:

1. Make more friends. Almost every people here are very open and very nice, try to make friends with them, help each other, and exchange your ideas, culture and languages.

2. Join into the collective. You are not loner here. Teachers and friends here love us so much, if you have problems, they are very warm hearted!

3. Don’t worry about your accent. Don’t feel lose face if your English level is not very high. Teachers here can help you improve your language and they understand what we thinking and feeling, they are also our friends.

I really love to share my life in York st John with peple, and I'd like to make our university much better. I love York st john, not only because if it has a high reputation I can find a good job in future, but also I have really had many good experiences here. I think though our university is not big, it also can be stronger and develop talents. We choose York st John is not just study here but try to contribute to it. I hope my experience will helpful.

As international students ,we some time only knew a few about how to live and study in UK.We need a leader as a communication bridge who really know Chinese and UK culture. We wish the international students party
have a person to help people know each other. As Chinese students the bad English Spoken make we shy to speak without a kind feeling...

BA (Hons) Study Abroad (1 Year) @ York St John

reviewed on February 20, 2014

I studied abroad at York St John the semester of spring 2014 and it was a blast! The university is beautiful, the staff and facilites are well looked after and are always willing to help. The food could have been better but at least there are great cafes and pubs in the city to go to! I personally could not have chosen a better school to have my experience of studying abroad! I would highly reccomend this university to anyone interested in studying abroad in England and to students who have a love for history as the school and the surrounding city are filled with history and awesome places to go and see!

I enjoy studying here! I know university is hard for everyone, but in YSJ, we have a better strategy which i love and that is "The challenge". Nothing is more fun than trying to work sincerely on a hard project together with different people. It's so realistic! That way, we can get to do practical practices and also learned from our mistakes even before we enter the real industry! isn't that great? Our university is really small, i would say, but i never regret coming here...i love how supportive everyone is, i love the small comfortable campus that feels like home, i love the feedback wall in the library, i love going to different social activities, and i love getting up early and go on our trips to different places in England every Saturday.
